Why the Motorola CP100d?
The CP100d hits the sweet spot between price and capability for teams that need reliable
voice communication without the complexity of higher-tier digital radios. Here's what
sets it apart:
Up to 35% longer talk time in digital mode
In digital mode, the CP100d's battery lasts significantly longer than a comparable analog
radio — up to 14.4 hours on a standard duty cycle. Fewer mid-shift battery swaps means
your crew stays connected throughout the workday.
Twice the voice capacity on a single licensed channel
Using TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) technology, the CP100d fits two separate
conversations onto a single 12.5 kHz licensed frequency. The Dual Capacity Direct Mode
feature doubles your usable channels without the cost of a repeater or additional
infrastructure — a meaningful saving for growing operations.
Clearer audio with less interference
Digital voice processing eliminates the static and background noise that degrades analog
communication in busy, noisy environments. Whether your team is on a warehouse floor,
a construction site, or a hotel corridor, calls come through clean and intelligible
throughout your coverage area.
Built tough — IP54 and MIL-STD 810 rated
The CP100d is splash-proof and dust-resistant to IP54, and meets U.S. Military Standard
810 (C, D, E, F, and G) for shock, vibration, temperature extremes, and humidity. Motorola
also ran these radios through Accelerated Life Testing — the equivalent of five years of
hard real-world use — before putting them on the market. This is a radio built to work
where your team works.
A straightforward path from analog to digital
If you're not ready to go fully digital right now, you don't have to. The CP100d is
available in analog-only configurations that can be software-upgraded to digital later,
protecting your investment as your operation evolves. In the meantime, analog and
digital models can communicate with each other on the same channel, so you can
transition your fleet at your own pace.
Coverage and Range
The CP100d's UHF models (403–470 MHz) deliver up to 4 watts of output power,
providing typical coverage of up to 375,000 square feet indoors or 2–4 miles in open
outdoor conditions. VHF models (136–174 MHz) output up to 5 watts and are better suited
for outdoor environments with fewer structural obstructions.
UHF frequencies penetrate concrete, steel, and other building materials more effectively
than VHF, making UHF the most common choice for warehouses, hotels, hospitals, schools,
and multi-story facilities. If you're unsure which band is right for your site,
Day Wireless offers system design consultations and, in some cases, site surveys to
help you make the right call before you buy.
Who Uses the Motorola CP100d?
The CP100d is one of the most widely deployed entry-level commercial radios in North America.
It performs well across a broad range of industries because it's easy to hand to a new
employee and requires minimal training. Common deployments include:
Construction
Project supervisors and crew leads use the CP100d to coordinate across large job sites
where cell coverage is spotty and noise is high. The IP54 rating handles dusty conditions
and light rain, while the rugged housing survives the occasional drop.
Education
School districts and universities use the CP100d for campus security, facilities management,
and administrative staff. The 16-channel non-display model is popular because it's simple
enough for part-time and volunteer staff to operate without training.
Healthcare and Senior Living
Hospitals, clinics, and care facilities use the CP100d for housekeeping, maintenance,
and support staff coordination. The voice announcement feature provides channel confirmation
without requiring staff to look at the radio — important in hands-busy care environments.
Hospitality
Hotels and resorts rely on the CP100d for front desk, housekeeping, valet, and security
departments. Pre-programmed text messaging allows for discreet communication in guest-facing
areas where voice calls would be disruptive.
Manufacturing and Warehousing
The CP100d keeps production line supervisors, forklift operators, and dock managers
connected across large floor spaces. Channel groups can be assigned by department or
shift to keep communications organized across large teams.
Property Management and Retail
Property managers and retail teams use the CP100d for maintenance dispatch, security,
and floor staff coordination. Its affordable price point makes it practical to outfit
a large team without a significant capital investment.
Choosing the Right CP100d Model
The CP100d is available in three keypad/display configurations, each suited to different
types of users:
Non-display, non-keypad (16 channels)
The simplest configuration. No screen, no keypad — just a channel selector knob and PTT
button. Best for front-line workers who are assigned a single channel or a small number
of preset channels. Lowest cost, easiest to use.
Limited keypad with display (160 channels)
Adds a screen and basic navigation buttons, giving supervisors and team leads the ability
to access up to 160 programmed channels. The display shows the channel name or number,
making it easier to switch between departments or functions.
Full keypad with display (160 channels)
The full keypad model is suited for managers and dispatchers who need direct channel
entry, alphanumeric display, and access to advanced features. It's the most capable
variant in the CP100d series.
Each configuration is available in VHF or UHF, and in analog-only or analog/digital
variants. See the Available Models tab below for specific part numbers.
Day Wireless can help you select the right combination for your team — and program
every radio before it ships.
Compatibility with Your Existing Radio Fleet
If you already have Motorola radios in service, the CP100d is designed to fit into
your existing ecosystem rather than needing to replace all your existing radios:
-
Accessory compatibility: The CP100d uses the same M1 2-pin accessory
connector as many previous Motorola commercial portables, including the CP185 and CP200. Existing
earpieces, surveillance kits, and remote speaker mics from CP185-era fleets typically
work without modification.
-
Battery and charger compatibility: The CP100d shares battery and charger
compatibility with select prior Motorola commercial radios. If you have existing
multi-unit chargers or battery packs, ask your Day Wireless representative whether
they carry over.
-
Mixed analog/digital operation: Analog-mode CP100d units can communicate
with older analog radios on the same programmed frequency. This allows you to integrate
new CP100d units into an existing fleet without requiring all radios to be replaced
at the same time.
-
MOTOTRBO interoperability: Digital CP100d radios are part of the
MOTOTRBO platform and can communicate with other MOTOTRBO digital portables and
mobiles, including the R2, R5, R7, CM200d, CM300d, and XPR 5000e series, in conventional mode.
FCC Licensing
The CP100d operates on licensed business frequencies (Part 90) and requires an FCC
license to operate legally in the United States. A license assigns specific frequencies
to your organization, ensuring interference-free communication on your channels.
Day Wireless offers FCC licensing assistance through our
FCC Licensing Services team. We handle
the application process on your behalf, so you can focus on your business. If you
already hold a license, we program your CP100d radios to your assigned frequencies
before delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the analog and digital versions of the CP100d?
Analog-only CP100d models communicate using traditional FM analog signals — the same
technology used in most older business radios. Digital models add MOTOTRBO TDMA digital
capability, which provides longer battery life, clearer audio (especially in noisy
environments), twice the channel capacity on a single licensed frequency, and the ability
to communicate with other MOTOTRBO digital radios. Analog-only models can be upgraded
to digital via a software license at a later date, so you're not locked in at purchase.
Will the CP100d work with a repeater?
Yes. The CP100d can be programmed on digital and analog conventional repeaters.
Is the Motorola CP100d still available?
Yes. The CP100d remains an active product in the Motorola Solutions commercial radio
lineup as of 2026. It is available in multiple configurations through Day Wireless.
Contact us for current inventory and lead times.
How does the CP100d compare to the R2?
The CP100d and R2 are both entry-level MOTOTRBO commercial portables. The R2
is the higher-spec option, offering more rugged construction, louder audio, and better battery life. The CP100d is the more affordable choice and is well suited for indoor
environments and lighter-duty use. If your team works outdoors in wet or extremely dusty
conditions, the R2 or higher end models may be the better fit. Day Wireless can walk you through both
options.
Will the CP100d work with my older Motorola radios?
In analog mode, yes — the CP100d can be programmed to operate on the same frequencies
as most older Motorola commercial analog radios. In digital mode, it operates on
MOTOTRBO TDMA frequencies compatible with other MOTOTRBO digital portables and
mobiles. For compatibility with a specific radio model, contact Day Wireless before
purchasing and we'll confirm whether the radios can be programmed to share channels.
Does the CP100d require an FCC license?
Yes. The CP100d operates on licensed Part 90 business frequencies. Operating without
an FCC license is a federal violation. Day Wireless provides FCC licensing services
and will program your radios to your assigned frequencies before delivery. If your
organization already holds a license, simply provide your frequency assignments and
we'll handle the programming.
How many channels does the CP100d support?
The non-display, non-keypad model supports 16 channels. The limited keypad and full
keypad display models support up to 160 channels. In digital mode with Dual Capacity
Direct Mode enabled, the radio effectively doubles usable capacity on each frequency
without requiring additional licenses or infrastructure.
Can the CP100d be used for indoor coverage in a large building?
Yes. The UHF version of the CP100d is well suited for indoor use in facilities such
as warehouses, hospitals, hotels, and schools. UHF signals penetrate building materials
more effectively than VHF. For very large or structurally complex buildings,
Day Wireless can design a repeater-based or in-building coverage solution to extend
range. Contact us to discuss your facility's specific requirements.
What accessories come with the CP100d?
Standard CP100d packages include the radio, a standard 1750 mAh lithium-ion battery,
a belt clip, an antenna, a single-unit rapid charger, and an owner's manual. A wide
range of optional accessories is available, including high-capacity batteries, multi-unit
chargers, earpieces, surveillance kits, remote speaker mics, and carry cases. See the
Accessories tab for the full list of compatible items.
