Frequently Asked Questions

What is MOTOTRBO?

MOTOTRBO is Motorola Solutions' professional digital two-way radio platform, built on the open DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) standard and using TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) technology. TDMA splits each licensed radio channel into two independent time slots, which means a single frequency pair gives your business two simultaneous voice or data channels — effectively doubling your capacity compared to analog at no additional spectrum cost.

Beyond the radio hardware, MOTOTRBO is a complete communications ecosystem: portable and mobile radios, SLR-series repeaters, scalable system architectures (Conventional, IP Site Connect, Capacity Plus, and Capacity Max), a full accessories portfolio, and a wide range of business applications covering voice dispatch, GPS tracking, work ticket management, personnel safety, and more. It is used by businesses of every size across manufacturing, hospitality, construction, healthcare, logistics, utilities, and many other industries worldwide.

What is the difference between MOTOTRBO and analog two-way radio?

The gap between MOTOTRBO digital and legacy analog radio is significant across every dimension your team depends on:

  • Audio quality — Analog audio degrades gradually as you approach the edge of coverage, resulting in static and dropped transmissions. MOTOTRBO digital audio stays crisp and clear right up to the coverage boundary, then cuts cleanly. No static.
  • Channel capacity — MOTOTRBO's TDMA technology provides twice the channel capacity of analog radio using the same frequency pair. Where an analog system gives you one call per channel, MOTOTRBO gives you two simultaneous, independent voice or data channels.
  • Battery life — MOTOTRBO radios deliver up to 40% longer battery life than comparable analog radios, meaning fewer mid-shift battery swaps and lower long-term battery costs.
  • Range — MOTOTRBO delivers intelligible speech over longer distances than analog, maintaining clarity where analog would produce unintelligible static.
  • Data and applications — Analog is voice only. MOTOTRBO supports integrated voice, data, text messaging, GPS location tracking, work order management, and third-party application integration — all over the same radio network.
  • Safety features — MOTOTRBO adds Man Down/Fall Alert detection, Lone Worker monitoring, digital emergency calling, and personnel location tracking — none of which are available on analog systems.
  • Security — MOTOTRBO supports encrypted communications and remote radio stun, revive, and kill capabilities. Analog offers no equivalent.

For most businesses, the switch from analog to MOTOTRBO delivers measurable returns through improved productivity, reduced communication failures, and enhanced worker safety.

Are MOTOTRBO radios outdated?

No — MOTOTRBO is the current-generation digital radio platform from Motorola Solutions, and it continues to receive active development, new hardware releases, and software updates. Here is why the "is it outdated?" question often comes up, and why the answer is clearly no:

The platform is built on an open, future-proof standard. MOTOTRBO is built on the ETSI DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) standard — an internationally recognized, open protocol designed for longevity. This means MOTOTRBO infrastructure and radios are not locked to a proprietary dead end; they are interoperable with other DMR-compliant equipment and can evolve as standards evolve.

The hardware lineup is actively updated. The MOTOTRBO R7 — released as the flagship professional portable — features Adaptive Audio Engine technology with AI-trained noise suppression, Bluetooth 5.2, integrated Wi-Fi, IP68 waterproofing, and MIL-SPEC 810H durability. The MOTOTRBO Ion is an Android-based smart radio that runs LTE, Wi-Fi, and DMR simultaneously. These are not legacy products.

The platform has expanded, not contracted. Today's MOTOTRBO ecosystem integrates with broadband PTT (WAVE PTX), video security (Avigilon), access control, orchestration workflows, and AI-powered analytics — capabilities that would be impossible on a declining platform.

Motorola Solutions is the market leader in LMR. As the world's largest manufacturer of land mobile radio systems, Motorola Solutions invests heavily in MOTOTRBO's continued development. Businesses with 15-year design life requirements trust the platform precisely because of that commitment.

If you are comparing MOTOTRBO to competitors, the key differentiators are superior IMPRES battery management technology, advanced audio features (including AI-trained noise suppression available on the R7), the broadest range of compatible radios across all system types, the largest third-party application developer network, and integration into the Motorola Solutions safety and security ecosystem.

Why should I invest in MOTOTRBO radios for my business?

The case for MOTOTRBO comes down to three things: productivity, safety, and long-term value.

Productivity. MOTOTRBO puts instant, reliable push-to-talk communication in every worker's hand — with twice the channel capacity of analog, crystal-clear audio even in noisy environments, and the ability to layer in data applications like GPS tracking, work order ticketing, alarm integration, and text messaging. Your team spends less time repeating themselves and more time doing the work.

Safety. MOTOTRBO radios include built-in safety features that analog simply cannot match: dedicated emergency buttons, Fall Alert detection for workers in hazardous environments, Lone Worker monitoring that automatically escalates if a worker becomes unresponsive, and real-time GPS tracking for outdoor and indoor personnel. These features protect your workforce and help meet your duty-of-care obligations.

Long-term value. MOTOTRBO is a CapEx investment, not a recurring carrier subscription. You own the infrastructure, you control the network, and you are not subject to carrier coverage gaps or monthly per-user fees for basic voice communication. Motorola Solutions designs MOTOTRBO radios to last — every radio must pass accelerated life testing that simulates five years of hard use and anticipates a 15-year design life. Essential Services packages extend value further by providing software updates, premium feature unlocks, and factory-certified hardware repair that returns radios to original specifications.

Scalability. MOTOTRBO grows with your business. You can start with a simple single-site Conventional system for up to 200 users, add sites via IP Site Connect without new hardware, scale to Capacity Plus trunking for high-traffic environments, or build a Capacity Max enterprise system supporting up to 750 sites and 3,000 users per site. You are never locked into a system you have outgrown.

Ecosystem integration. MOTOTRBO is part of the broader Motorola Solutions safety and security ecosystem. Your radios can connect to video analytics, access control, license plate recognition, mass notification, and incident management — turning your radio network into a real-time operational intelligence platform rather than just a voice tool.

Which MOTOTRBO radio is right for my business?

MOTOTRBO organizes its radio lineup into four tiers, each matched to a specific type of worker and use case:

  • Commercial tier (R2, SL300, CM Series) — Simple, voice-focused radios for light users who need to stay connected without complexity. Easy to migrate from analog. The SL300 is ideal for customer-facing hospitality and retail staff who need a slim, discreet portable.
  • Entry Professional tier (R5, SL3500e/SL3500Max, XPR 2500) — A step up to voice plus basic systems and data. The R5 supports both DMR digital and analog modes, making it the easiest migration path for businesses upgrading from analog without replacing all infrastructure at once. The SL3500e suits professional environments like healthcare campuses and corporate facilities where professionalism and performance coexist.
  • Professional Enhanced tier (R7, XPR 5000e mobile) — The top tier for skilled professionals in demanding environments. The R7 is the flagship MOTOTRBO portable: AI-trained noise suppression, Adaptive Audio Engine, IP66/IP68 waterproofing, MIL-SPEC 810H durability, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Compatible with all system types. Optional HazLoc certification for hazardous environments. The XPR 5000e is the in-vehicle companion for fleet supervisors and field crews.
  • Premium tier (MOTOTRBO Ion) — For connected managers and mobile workers who need both push-to-talk voice and real-time data on one device. The Ion runs Android, supports DMR, LTE, and Wi-Fi simultaneously, and handles barcode scanning, work order apps, and location tracking alongside radio voice.

Not sure which tier fits your operation? Talk to a Day Wireless specialist → — we will match the right radio to every role in your workforce.

How much does a MOTOTRBO system cost?

MOTOTRBO system pricing varies based on the number of radios, the system architecture (Conventional, IP Site Connect, Capacity Plus, or Capacity Max), infrastructure requirements such as repeaters, antennas, combining equipment, backup power, and networking gear, and the services required for installation, programming, and ongoing support. A small business deploying a handful of radios on a single-site Conventional system has a very different budget than a large enterprise building a multi-site Capacity Max trunked network.

Day Wireless offers flexible financing and leasing options to make MOTOTRBO accessible for businesses of all sizes. Request a free quote → and we will build a solution that fits your operation and your budget.

Can MOTOTRBO radios work with my existing analog radios?

Yes. Several MOTOTRBO radios — including the R5 and the CP100d series — support both DMR digital and analog modes, allowing them to communicate with your existing analog fleet during a phased migration. MOTOTRBO repeaters also support Dynamic Mixed Mode, where the repeater automatically switches between analog and digital based on whichever type of radio initiates a call. This means your analog and digital radios can share the same repeater infrastructure during the transition, protecting your existing investment while moving toward full digital capability at your own pace.

What is the range of a MOTOTRBO radio?

Range depends on the radio model, frequency band, terrain, and whether you are using a repeater. MOTOTRBO is available across three frequency bands, and choosing the right one for your environment matters:

  • VHF (136–174 MHz) — Best for open, outdoor terrain with minimal obstructions such as agriculture, maritime, and forestry operations. VHF is less susceptible to interference and carries well over distance in open areas.
  • UHF (403–512 MHz) — Best for indoor environments, warehouses, and dense urban areas where concrete and steel penetration is required. UHF is the most common choice for manufacturing, hospitality, and multi-floor facilities.
  • 800/900 MHz (806–869 MHz / 900–941 MHz) — Best for dense metropolitan areas requiring high building penetration. Ideal as a control channel frequency in trunked systems, though it has the shortest range of the three bands.

In a direct radio-to-radio configuration, most MOTOTRBO portables cover 1–3 miles in open terrain. With a properly installed MOTOTRBO repeater, range will extend depending on antenna height, terrain, and power output. With IP Site Connect or trunked systems linking multiple repeaters, coverage can span an entire region. Day Wireless provides professional RF coverage assessments and wide-area coverage testing to ensure your system performs exactly where your team needs it.

Does MOTOTRBO work nationwide?

Yes — in two ways. First, MOTOTRBO IP Site Connect and trunked systems (Capacity Plus and Capacity Max) can link repeaters across up to 750 sites to create wide-area coverage tailored to your geography. Radios roam automatically between sites based on signal strength, so workers move between locations without manually changing channels.

Second, the WAVE PTX broadband PTT platform extends MOTOTRBO push-to-talk communication over public LTE networks — giving your team nationwide coverage wherever cellular signal exists. Newer MOTOTRBO radios including the R7, XPR 5000e, and Ion support WAVE PTX Backup Client, which automatically switches voice and signaling to broadband when LMR coverage is lost and seamlessly returns to the radio network when coverage is restored. This is particularly useful for filling coverage dead spots in buildings with heavy RF shielding, basements, underground facilities, or remote satellite locations with available Wi-Fi.

Day Wireless also operates the TRBOWEST wide-area MOTOTRBO network across the Pacific Northwest, providing ready-made regional coverage without the cost of building your own infrastructure.

How do I get MOTOTRBO radios programmed and licensed?

Day Wireless handles the complete setup process — FCC frequency coordination and licensing, radio programming, system configuration, and professional installation — so you do not have to navigate any of it alone. Our technicians are factory-trained and certified by Motorola Solutions, and our in-house FCC licensing team manages frequency applications on your behalf. Learn more about FCC licensing services →
